Gaining through Losing

I’ve lost 5 pounds. I know that doesn’t sound like much – but it is a mini-milestone in a couple of ways.

First, it is the first weight I’ve specifically prayed about losing – ever. You read that right. I’ve been a believer in Jesus for almost forty years, and have struggled with my weight for more than thirty of those years. Reasons why are numerous and messy. And I’ve often prayed, “Lord, help me lose weight.”  But I’ve never, before this year, prayed, “Lord, help me lose X pounds.” I decided, while reading a book about holiness habits earlier this month, to begin praying for specific pounds to be lost. I decided to pray over every 5-pound goal. And this is the first achievement of that goal – the first answered prayer for specific weight loss. Plus, this weight loss occurred over Spring Break, while I was visiting family and not being super-diligent about my eating!

Second, this weight loss occurred over Spring Break, while I was visiting family and not being super-diligent about my eating! Just goes to show the power of prayer! Yes – I did keep praying daily for that 5-pound goal even on break, even while not closely monitoring what I ate.

Finally, it is a milestone because it’s the first weight I’ve lost since the holidays – and it didn’t happen until I started praying about it! I’ve been super-stressed, eating for comfort, and ignoring the real needs of my spirit to gain comfort in Christ. Consequently, although my meals were fine, snacking was keeping the pounds stationary. But now, they’ve started moving again!

It isn’t much, but it’s something. And tonight, in my prayer journal, I recorded an answer to prayer – and wrote out a new 5-pound prayer. I’m excited to see where this new journey of prayer takes me: as the Lord teaches me about trusting Him with small things, where will He take me when larger challenges come my way?
